You should always have a variety of pens and pencils in your travel journal kit. Here are some of my favorites that I’ve tested over many trips. Remember, you can use anything to write with. Don’t let your supplies stop you from journaling!
The Micron: My Favorite Pen for All Types of Journaling
My absolute favorite pen to use in my travel journal is the Micron Pen by Sakura. It writes beautifully, comes in a lot of different tip sizes (from very fine to very thick, like a sharpie) and it uses archival ink so it won’t bleed, wash away if you spill
I started using this pen after water spilled in my bag, got on my journal and all of my journaling was lost! Determined to find a good waterproof pen that was fun to use, I found this one because a lot of illustrators that I like use them for their professional work. So I decided to try them out. There’s a reason professionals use and love these, they are amazing!
To first try them, I would buy a pack of black that comes with different tip sizes. I prefer different tips for different things. For writing I like to use a thinner tip, like a .03 and for hand lettering I like a thicker tip, like a 1.
These will really last you a long time and I bet you’ll love the result. After I found that I liked them so much I bought a pack of colored pens, now I take a couple colors with me on each trip. It gives each trip its own color personality and love picking these up every time I sit down to journal. You can buy a pack of 8 or a pack of 14.
